BP Egypt President: Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' Strategy Is Accelerating Field Development and Maximizing the Use of Existing Infrastructure to Increase Gas Production
As part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' strategy to increase domestic oil and natural gas production, accelerate field development, and bring wells onstream, bp has commenced production from "Fayoum 4" well in the West Nile Delta, adding approximately 80 MMcf/d of natural gas.
Production from the well is part of the Ministry's strategy to stimulate investment and accelerate field development. BP has helped fast-track the development and production of natural gas while maximizing the use of existing infrastructure and facilities, supporting an increase in Egypt's domestic natural gas production.
The company successfully brought forward the start of gas production from "Fayoum 4" well by around two years ahead of schedule, through accelerating project implementation and leveraging existing offshore infrastructure, which reflects the significance of integrating exploration, production and development activities, while accelerating bringing new discoveries onstream.
In 2025, BP conducted a successful exploration campaign that resulted in Fayoum discovery. The company subsequently commenced development activities and worked to tie the well's production into West Nile Delta gas-processing facilities.
To maximize the field's resources, BP also successfully drilled a sidetrack from the well to access new Messinian reservoir intervals within the West Nile Delta field at depths of approximately 3,000 meters, eliminating the need to drill a separate well or construct new subsea infrastructure. This contributed to reducing the time required to commence production and maximizing the use of available resources and infrastructure.
The well's production has been linked to the West Nile Delta gas-processing facilities through the Giza–Fayoum pipeline, using innovative engineering solutions to overcome technical challenges and leverage existing offshore infrastructure. This enabled additional gas volumes to be brought into production more rapidly
Wail Shaheen, President of bp Egypt, highlighted that the start-up of production from "Fayoum 4" well reflects the company's continued support for the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources' strategy to accelerate field development activities, maximize the utilization of existing infrastructure, and deploy the latest technologies to increase domestic natural gas production in Egypt.
West Nile Delta comprises a group of natural gas fields located in Egypt's offshore waters, within the North Alexandria and West Mediterranean Deepwater concession areas. BP operates the West Nile Delta facilities with an 82.75% interest, while Harbour Energy holds the remaining 17.25% interest
