Eng. Karim Badawi , Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, discussed with Ms. Namrata Thapar, World Bank Group Global Director for Metals and Minerals, ways to enhance cooperation between both sides in support of efforts to develop Egypt’s mining sector and provide the financing mechanisms needed for mining projects, as well as building human capacities and developing technical expertise. The talks were held on the sidelines of Egypt Mining Forum (EMF) 2026, being held on September 28 and 29 in the New Capital. Ms. Thapar is participating as a keynote speaker at the forum, representing World Bank Group.
Eng. Karim Badawi asserted that Egypt aims to achieve a genuine transformation in the mining sector and increase its contribution to GDP to around 6%, compared to less than 1% currently, by developing the mining sector’s operating framework, creating a more attractive investment environment, and strengthening partnerships with the private sector and international financial institutions.
For her part, Ms. Namrata Thapar affirmed World Bank Group’s interest in providing initial financing to support Egypt’s mining sector, highlighting that capacity building represents a practical starting point for strengthening cooperation. She expressed interest in supporting private-sector projects, particularly in phosphate and phosphate-based industries, and in connecting junior mining companies with suitable investors and partners to enhance their access to financing and opportunities for expansion.
Both sides agreed on the significance of viewing mining as an integrated value chain, starting with exploration and geological resources and extending to infrastructure, financing, mining, processing, manufacturing and exports, thereby maximizing the added value of mineral resources rather than focusing solely on the production and export of raw materials.
