Minister of Petroleum Discusses Placing Egypt on Rio Tinto’s Investment Map during the Future Minerals Forum in Riyadh

On 13th January 2025, on the sidelines of his participation in the fifth edition of the Future Minerals Forum (FMF) in Riyadh, Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, held a meeting with Mr. Dominic Barton, Chairman of the global mining group "Rio Tinto." During the meeting, they discussed ways to attract the group's investments to the Egyptian mining sector and cooperation in localizing the latest mining technologies. They also reviewed opportunities and mechanisms for the company's entry into investment in the promising areas of the Arabian-Nubian Shield, contributing to Egypt's transformation into a regional hub for the production and manufacturing of critical and strategic minerals.

Both sides reviewed Egypt's geological potential and the opportunities available for the group to commence mineral exploration activities using its advanced geophysical survey technologies and digital solutions.

They also discussed energy transition minerals, such as copper and lithium, in addition to Egypt's status within international supply chains of these minerals and how to leverage Rio Tinto's expertise in developing integrated mining projects that link exploration and extraction with manufacturing operations to maximize added value.

The Minister invited the company to visit Egypt and explore opportunities in the mining sector, highlighting Egypt's capabilities that make it a strategic entry point for mining operations in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.
