Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon Agree on Delivering Egyptian Gas to Lebanon

Petroleum and Energy Ministers of Egypt, Jordon, Syria and Lebanon before their Meeting in Jordon

On 8th September 2021, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan hosted the Ministerial Meeting of the Arab Gas Pipeline countries (AGP) (Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon). During the meeting, they agreed on delivering the Egyptian natural gas to the Lebanese Republic through Jordan and Syria, as well as presenting a scheduled agenda for its implementation.

The meeting was attended by Eng. Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Hala Zawati, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Raymond Ghajar, Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water, and Eng. Bassam Tohme, Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources.

Minister Zawati told the reporters that the meeting aims at cooperating in the domain of re-exporting Egyptian natural gas to the Lebanese Republic through the Jordanian and Syrian territories via the Arab Gas Pipeline. In addition, Jordan will exert all efforts for assisting the Lebanese people to overcome the energy crisis, with directions from His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein.

For his part, Eng. Tarek El-Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, affirmed that Egypt is accelerating coordination efforts to transfer the Egyptian natural gas to Lebanon through Jordan and Syria, in light of its keenness to mitigate the burdens on the Lebanese people, trying to support Lebanon and preserve its stability.

For his part, Bassam Tohme, the Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources, said that the AGP's project is one of the most significant joint Arab cooperation projects, which has been established since 2003, and that Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and then Jordan are the main countries in the MoU signed in 2000, in which Jordan joined in 2001.

For his part, the Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water, thanked Jordan, Egypt and Syria for the initiative of reviving the quadripartite Agreement for delivering Egyptian gas to Lebanon, through Jordan and Syria

Jordanian Prime Minister Receives Energy Ministers of Egypt, Syria and Lebanon


H.E. Dr. Bisher Al Khasawneh, Jordanian Prime Minister, received the the energy Ministers of Egypt, Syria and Lebanon. He affirmed the existence of various domains of cooperation among the four countries (Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan), achieving mutual interests for the welfare of their peoples.

During the Press Conference in the Jordanian Capital, Amman, after his meeting with the Ministers of Petroleum and Energy of Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, Eng. Tarek El Molla, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources affirmed the clear directives of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi for bolstering our neighbours in Lebanon, by supplying their needs of natural gas, to overcome the current crisis. During the meeting, a road map was set to be implemented, during the coming weeks, by the technical teamwork, for pumping natural gas as soon as possible; pointing out that work will take place on two tracks, reviewing the technical readiness of the infrastructure of the gas transmission lines and networks, as well as some previous contract items.

El Molla thanked Jordan and his Jordanian counterpart, Hala Zawati, for hosting the meeting in the Jordanian Capital, as well as coordination among the four countries.
