On 3rd October 2025, Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, received Abang Yusuf, Vice President of Malaysian company Petronas for LNG Assets, with his accompanying delegation. They discussed ways for enhancing the strategic partnership in the natural gas domain as well as maximizing the utilization of Egypt's gas infrastructure, in light of Petronas's investments and its partnership with Shell in the West Nile Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) fields and Idku Energy Hub project.
The meeting was attended by Eng. Mahmoud Abdelhamid, Executive Managing Director of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), and Eng. Hani Esmat, CEO of Petronas Egypt.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed cooperation domains and joint projects, aiming to improve energy efficiency, enhance the operational capacity of the complex, reduce consumption and emissions, and maximize the added value of the existing infrastructure.
The Minister praised the role of the Malaysian company in Egypt and its efforts in natural gas projects, pointing out his interest in increasing Petronas investments in the gas upstream domain, a line with the promising opportunities in the sector.
For his part, Abang Yusuf expressed his appreciation for the cooperation with Egypt and the strategic partnership with the petroleum sector, which he described as the cornerstone of expansion plans in the West Nile Delta Deep Marine fields in the Mediterranean. He reaffirmed the company's confidence in Egypt's investment climate and its interest in expanding its investments.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed on accelerating the implementation of the unified power system for Idku Energy Hub as well as maintaining the ongoing technical and commercial coordination between both parties' teams to ensure maximum economic and operational benefit from the complex. The Vice President of Petronas also invited the Minister to visit the Malaysian capital to explore opportunities for further cooperation.
