Improving energy efficiency is one of the most crucial decarbonization pillars of the Egyptian Petroleum Sector due to its tangible economic return and significant impact on reducing emissions and enhancing the production process. The petroleum sector's vision for energy efficiency is "Support the economic improvement of energy efficiency in the petroleum sector while achieving the sustainability goals of Egypt's Vision 2030 and contributing to energy security and decarbonization" as identified in the petroleum sector's Energy Efficiency strategy 2022-2035, which was announced by the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources during the twenty-seventh session of the Conference of the Parties "COP27" held in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022.

The significant contribution to energy efficiency activities began in February 2015 when the Supreme Committee for energy efficiency improvements in the Petroleum Sector was established, and continued with the launching of the Petroleum Sector modernization project which included a program to improve energy efficiency, which resulted many achievements, for example; implementation of nearly 340 energy efficiency measures and projects to rationalize and improve the efficiency of energy use in sector companies, which led to achieving annual savings of $135.5 million and a reduction of 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually. Alongside detailed technical energy efficiency audits were conducted on five companies within the Petroleum Sector, a comprehensive training plan was implemented, including 282 training programs for approximately 250 engineers as part of the capacity building project for the middle Management. Also three editions of the Petroleum Sector Energy Efficiency Conference and Exhibition (EPEEC) were successfully organized to raise the awareness of the importance of energy efficiency, the EPEEC engaged national and international organizations with the goal of fostering strong and sustainable working relationships between Sector Companies and all entities involved in in energy efficiency improvement technologies and service providers as well as the international and local financial institutions targeting to continuously improving the energy efficiency performance in Sector companies.

During this period, several cooperation programs aimed at enhancing energy efficiency were implemented with development partners such as the European Union, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Bank. These collaborations significantly contributed to the Petroleum Sector's accomplishments in improving energy efficiency, resulting in notable reductions in costs and emissions.
