South Valley Gas Pipeline

project's map

The South Valley Gas Pipeline is not just a project aiming at the expansion of the national gas grid, but a national and a strategic project; it is an extension of giant national projects like the High Dam and Suez Canal and is not less important. The project comes in implementation of President Hosni Mubarak's electoral platform paying great attention to Upper Egypt; that precious part of Egypt.
The concerted efforts of the Egyptian petroleum sector companies (The Egyptian Gas Holding Company, Ganope Holding Company,GASCO,PETROJET,and ENPPI) in order to complete South Valley gas pipeline according to set schedules and by the  hands of the petroleum sector workers, assures the sector's ability to implement  giant national projects.

The 930-km pipeline extends from Dahshour in the north to Aswan in the south with a 30"-32" diameter and total investment cost of about 5.7 milliard pound. The gas pipeline crosses the Nile at three sites. It is, thus, considered the largest gas pipeline in Egypt.

The project consists of six phases in addition to Dahshour compression station to keep up with the expected growing demand of gas.

Phase 1:  Dahshour – El-Koraimat Gas Pipeline (90 km length, 36" diameter)
Phase 2:  El-Koraimat – Beni Suef Gas Pipeline (30 km length, 32" diameter)
Phase 3:  from Beni Suef to Abu – Qorqas city in Menia (150 km length, 32" diameter)
Phase 4:  from Abu – Qorqas to Assiut (147 km length, 32" diameter)
Phase 5:  from Assiut to Gerga (121 km length, 32" diameter)
Phase 6:  from Gerga to Aswan (390 km length, 30" diameter)
The phases of the South Valley Gas Pipeline were completed in November 2009 as it reached Aswan and started to feed east and west the city.

The importance of the project:
• Contributing to supplying clean energy to Upper Egypt people, setting up new urban communities and industrial zones and attracting more investments as well as providing job opportunities for youth.
• The presence of the pipeline encourages exploration at South Valley areas where it facilitates connecting any new discovery in the area with the pipeline.
• Piping gas to Kima industrial complex contributes to saving 150 megawatt/hour of electricity, in addition to the increase in production, decreasing the costs, offering job opportunities, as well as providing nitrogen fertilizers for Upper Egypt governorates, thus participating in the agriculture development.
• During implementing the pipeline 5 thousand daily direct and indirect job opportunities were provided.

Gas Delivery to South Governorates:
• Field surveys of the residential and industrial zones have been carried out so as to be ready to receive the gas as soon as it arrives from the companies specialized in constructing pipelines and transmitting natural gas to houses and factories.
• The Action Plan includes conveying natural gas to 850 thousand houses in the South Valley governorates in addition to business clients.
• To achieve this plan a group of Egyptian specialized companies have been assigned to Menya, Assiut, Suhag, Qena, Luxor, and Aswan
